Thousand Islands district head Ahmad Ludfi said in Jakarta on Saturday the figure represented an almost 50 percent increase from the 680,000 visitors recorded last year.
The area hosts 5,000 tourists every weekend, who mostly opt to visit Bidadari Island, Tidung Island, Onrust Island, Untung Jawa Island and Rambut Island, Ahmad added.
“Most of the tourists make a one-day trip to the Thousand Islands,” he said.
Ahmad added that the figure could be higher if there wasn’t such limited boat services connecting the islands and mainland Jakarta.
The district administration is seeking to develop the area’s infrastructure and supporting facilities so as to make it easier for tourists to reach the islands.
The Thousand Islands, part of which makes up a national park area, consists of 78 islands, only 10 of which are inhabited. The district covers a total of 107,489 hectares.
